Breakfast with Benefits
We set the date: 28 March 2017. We found the venue: Morley Hayes. We decided on a name for our event: Breakfast with Benefits.
As photographers we think we have one of the simplest jobs in the world. Presenting to an audience is a little daunting though, as we do pictures, not words.
But then, how hard can it be? I mean all we have to do is provide a little insight into our commercial photography processes to a group of business professionals who have some interest in photography and marketing.
We can do this off-the-cuff. Ha!
After much preparation, panicking, planning, panicking, procrastinating and then some more panicking, we realise that there’s actually a ton of tacit knowledge that needs to be simplified or the audience might not get the point.
More panicking needed eek!
All too quickly the morning of March 28 arrived and so did half of Marketing Derby’s bondholders! No pressure then.
On arrival guests were treated to a selection of delicious breakfast canapés with their tea, coffee and juice. Bondholders then had the opportunity to mingle, chat and enjoy the beautiful, if misty, views over Morley Hayes' golf course.
Chris chose to talk first, always a wise decision in our book. A bit like corporate headshots - get it over with, then you can relax and enjoy the party! Having left the house at 5:30 that morning, he hadn't even had a chance to wish daughter Poppy a happy first birthday, so took the opportunity to do so in opening his presentation.
As many who know us will confirm, our 'style' at Cactus is relatively 'informal' and Chris raised a few chuckles along the way, whilst still managing to get across some serious points to consider when deciding on how good photography can help you!
We wanted to show how powerful and persuasive photography is and how important it is to get it right for every step of the journey.
Selling off the page is a term we are familiar with and Chris demonstrated this with a sequence of photographs that showed how we can be persuaded by photography and how our mind’s eye is guided to reach a natural and agreeable conclusion at the point of purchase.
Using this approach of creating desire or ‘synthetic happiness’ is not new by any means, advertisers continue to use these techniques because they are effective.
And that’s the point. Your photography needs to be effective. It needs to fulfil a requirement.
Are you trying to evoke an emotion - positive or otherwise?
Are you educating or informing?
Are you creating a need through desire?
Your photography is just one element of your business, but it has the greatest visual impact, from a marketing perspective.
So it’s not just a good photograph, it’s the beginning of the journey your mind’s eye will take. Make sure you're on the right path with your photography.
We love working with people to take their ideas and products and turn them into exciting, dynamic, inspiring and beautiful images that help our clients' products and services really stand out from the crowd.
